My Stance: Spawn Camping

Boink!

My tactic on 2fort as a scout is to run across the top of the bridge, waste the snipers on the enemy battlements, and then make my run for the intelligence. Often when I do this, snipers start to take a couple scoped shots at me, then run into the spawn with thier smg blazing. When snipers do this I will sometimes pull out the bat and wait by the door for them to return and get a nice melee kill when they do. Recently I was playing 2fort on a server and was doing quite well as a scout (doing my usual tactics) when a sniper exclaimed “stop spawn camping!” This upset me, let me tell you why:

THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH SPAWN CAMPING. IF YOU ARE MAD THAT SOMEONE IS “SPAWN CAMPING” IT IS BECAUSE YOU AREN’T SKILLED ENOUGH TO  TAKE THEM OUT WHEN THEY DO.

Originally spawn camping was a problem in games because people would immediately spawn and be killed with not even a chance to repel the assult. TF2 takes care of this by putting doors on the spawn areas in which the enemy can’t get to. If you can’t coordinate your team enough to repel them (or even figure out a way to get out of your spawn yourself) then they have outsmarted you, and deserve to kill you.

What ever happened to the challenge of online gaming? It seems anymore when a challenge is presented to online gamers they get mad and want an admin to take care of it for them. Well on the Montana Fragfest server I go ahead and challenge you to outsmart me. If I can’t take care of the challenge you present to me then you deserve to win and I give you kudos for that. Stop complaining about “spawn camping” and get creative!!

For me, it depends on the class used that is being used for spawn camping. Sitting there as a scout should have no ill effects, especially if you just have a bat out. I think one of the douche-baggy things to do in this game especially in 2fort is to camp with a Demo man. The other night on the BONG server there was this gentlemen that would just sit on his grate and load it with stickies and then detonate them. He wouldn’t even pursue anyone. I look at this as “whats the fun in that.” Equivalently, its pretty lame to sit up on the enemy’s spawn with stickies. I can see if you are just up there and you do it once or twice but making it your goal is pretty lame. And I am a guilty party. But the real dick in the ass is a Heavy Medic combo. Unless someone goes down the long stairs and comes up the spiral the Heavy can pretty much take on the the whole team.

    lol wut?

If you can get to their spawn without dying, you deserve to ‘camp’

One funny thing about 2fort is, there are 2 spawns. But yeah, you’re right, if multiple people, especially including demomen or engy with sentry guns, then that’s kind of taking it too far. However, again, if they got there in the first place, they probably deserve to be there, and if you can’t take them out, maybe you don’t deserve to.

Camping is a legit strategy no matter what class/classes do it, imho. I’m far from skilled enough to pull it off, but if you can, it neutralises the other team and lets you win… which is the goal of the game, correct?

Sure, it’s not fun for the other team, but losing’s never fun, right? It’s not exploiting anything, it’s just pure skill. So kudos to the spawn campers :P and campers in general, more often than not it’s tactically legit.

I agree with Bullet-Tooth. If I was a sniper in spawn and I knew that there was a scout outside, I would just quickly swap to a pyro and burn him. Its only sticky camping or a turret on spawn thats annoying.

  7. Proximity Says:

But even with stickies and and turrets if you work as a team you can defeat it. Have a heavy open the door while a cloaked spy runs out, or use the pyro’s blow gun to blow the stickies away right before he dies and then your teammates can rush out.

    It can be done!

[...] can understand why some people are completely against spawn camping, though I myself have a much more open view of that topic. But seriously? Grate-camping? I’m sorry, but if you can’t get around a demo-camped [...]
