Achieve What?!?!

The New EnemyValve recently released their new achievement system for the Medic in Team Fortress 2, and personally, I don’t like it. In the past I have throughly enjoyed several achievement-based upgrade systems (Battlefield 2, Call of Duty 4), but Valve got it all wrong. I am a gaming purist, I strive to play the game as the developers intended. My understanding is that an achievement is gained through playing the game in a normal fashion. That doesn’t mean you can’t do amazing things in the normal course of a game (I mean I’m like Mr. Wizard out there), but some of Valve’s achievements are obviously not made to happen in the normal flow of a game.

Achievement: You’ll Feel a Little Prick

Assist in killing 3 enemies with a single Uber-Charge on a Scout. There is no practical use for this in the game??! why in the hell would you uber a scout? I’ll tell you why: to farm an achievement. Another terrrible one:

Achievement: Blunt Trauma

Assist in punching out 4 enemies with a single Uber-Charge on a Heavy. I tell you what in a normal game if I uber a heavy and he gets his fists out I’m pretty pissed. Once again an achievement that should not be in there.

Overall I think Valve can fix this, by putting in achievements that MIGHT actually happen in the course of a normal game. Oh yeah, and not allowing achievements to be gained on passworded servers, that kind of screams farming.

I agree Prox. Honestly, I think this can be mitigated by whom you play with, and kicking farmers.

What really disturbs me is the ubersaw. While the critz and bloodsucker guns aren’t THAT much more powerful, the ubersaw is advantageous. When I’m playing against a team full of medics who have it, I feel as if I need to start farming to balance it out.

The goal of these weapons is that they would not be more powerful than the standard ones. That is not the case. In the future, I feel we will all have to farm, because everyone else will be.

I am proud to report that with Bullet-Tooth Tony’s help I legitimately got the new needle gun last night!

The new needle gun is fun as hell. I don’t have the crits yet, but don’t care much about that. The uber saw is something I’m definitely looking forward to.
